This should not be surprising given the ubiquity of the Internet in the daily lives of tens of millions of Filipinos, who seem to do virtually everything online. If you are interested in entering the burgeoning field of digital marketing, why not sign up for the Digital Careers Talk scheduled for 20 February 2013 at the AIM Conference Center?

The four-hour event is designed to familiarize you with some of the hottest careers in digital marketing, which include Social Media Marketing Specialist, eBusiness Specialist and Digital Media Planner Specialist. In addition, you’ll learn which companies are hiring and what qualifications they’re looking for as well as the qualities that makes a digital marketer sought-after. Scheduled speakers at the event include Frederic Levy, the CEO of CashCashPinoy, Jonathan Joson, the Executive Director of Media Contacts, Peach Natividad, the Head of Digital Planning at Tribal DDB and Rosario Juan, the Social Media Director of Movent.

To help prepare you for the event, here are some tips to help aspiring digital marketers break into the field:

  1. Get some actual experience in marketing. Hands-on experience in marketing can greatly enhance your employability. If you are still in college, look for marketing internships with companies that focus on online marketing. Try to work on an actual marketing campaign or in a related area such as optimization of websites.
  2. Create a strong online presence. If you haven’t yet, set up a Facebook page and open a Twitter account and use them to build a strong online following. This will greatly help your standing with potential employers.
  3. As much as possible, try your hand at all areas of digital marketing before you make the decision on which area to specialize. This will familiarize you with all your potential career options and also provide you with grounding in related areas that will inform your ultimate specialization.
  4. Keep your finger on the pulse of the latest trends. The fast-paced nature of the Internet means that things are always changing and if you don’t keep up, you’ll inevitably find yourself left behind. You can stay connected to the latest industry trends by subscribing to newsletters and blogs such as AdWeek, eMarketer and Ad Age.
  5. Be familiar with programming languages. Although as a digital marketer, you won’t be involved with the technical aspects of website design, you still need to be able to communicate your ideas in a language that programmers will understand. So you should have a working knowledge of languages such as JavaScript, Ruby and CSS. This will also give you an idea of how users interact with websites so you can suggest ways to improve user experiences.
  6. Develop a passion for your chosen career. One of the things that are most attractive to employers is an applicant who is not only knowledgeable about their field but also passionate about it. This passion will help you be on the cutting edge of the industry, and make it more likely that you’ll be easily able to adjust to changing conditions by constantly being on top of new trends.
