Nine Tips for Successfully Outsourcing Work to Freelancing Companies

Outsourcing work is no longer just for big corporations; these days, even small to medium businesses can enjoy financial benefits from outsourcing some of their work. By availing of outsourcing from freelancing websites, you can save money by not having to hire additional workers, allowing you to focus on your core business activities. But outsourcing also carries with it a certain level of risk, such as not having contracted work successfully completed. Here are some tips to help you outsource successfully.

  1. Decide which projects you want to be outsourced. The best projects to be entrusted to outside workers are probably those that are not related to the core business of your company but related business processes. For example, if you are a software developer, you’ll probably want to keep all major programming work in-house but outsource functions such as managing emails and data entry.
  2. Write down an outsourcing proposal. The project proposal should include the scope of the work that you want done, the project timeframe and budget allocated for the project as well as any other requirements that need to be met.
  3. When evaluating proposals from freelancing companies, treat it as if you were hiring a full-time employee. Ask them for the contact numbers of past clients that you can speak to as references. Talk to them about their capabilities to deliver the work that you need from them, as well as any related experience that they might have.
  4.  Before you settle on a company, ask them for sample work so that you can evaluate how well they can perform what you need from them.
  5. Don’t choose a company based on price alone. Look for a company that will offer you a balance between value and the quality of the services offered. In fact, you should consider rejecting the vendors who have given the lowest and the highest bids and focus your efforts on those in the middle.
  6. Establish clear lines of communication. This is particularly important so you’ll know who to speak to when you’re following up the project as well as expressing any concerns you may have about it. If the outsourcing company is located in a country where English is not the native language, make sure that you can always speak with somebody who is fluent in English.
  7. Tie the payments to specific achievement targets. This will help protect your interests in case you are unhappy about some part of the work that needs to be redone.
  8. Negotiate a support clause for the project so that you can still ask for changes after the project has been submitted in full if any problems crop up afterwards.
  9. Make sure you get all of the important details in a written agreement. This includes how much you’ve agreed to pay for the project, the schedule of project deliverables and any other important details. And if the agreement undergoes any modifications in the course of the project, keep copies of the originals alongside the modified agreements.
