A Trip Through Time with the Wayback Machine

The concept of the Wayback Machine is pretty interesting.  But before we jump into the details of how important it is in the marketing world, I personally think that we should first go into the history of the Wayback Machine.

This only means that everyone who wishes to become successful in the worldwide web can rely on the Wayback Machine for stories and tips that have been proven to work for other websites in the past.

This only means that everyone who wishes to become successful in the worldwide web can rely on the Wayback Machine for stories and tips that have been proven to work for other websites in the past.

This tool is one of the best ways to trace the success of many popular websites.  There is a lot that marketers can gain from learning about the stories of success in the Wayback Machine’s archive of popular websites throughout time.
The Wayback Machine was conceptualized some years back in order to create a time capsule in the worldwide web.  Just like the conventional time capsule, this Machine stores past information so that people in the future can access them for their own purposes.  In this case, we can learn exactly which websites are famous and successful at certain periods of time.  This was initiated by a popular non-profit organization, Internet Archive.  The Machine has a unique 3D or three dimensional index that allows users of the service to locate and access archived web page versions throughout time.  The website is maintained and updated by Alexa Internet.

Not the WABAC Machine

Many people mistake the Wayback Machine for the WABAC machine because of the similarity in the pronunciation of the two names.  As opposed to the one launched by Internet Archive, the WABAC machine is a segment in a TV show wherein the time machine is referred to as the WABAC machine.  The name Wayback machine is actually inspired by the TV show’s success, even if the functions of the two “machines” are very much different from one another.
Archiving Methodologies in the Wayback Machine
In 1996, the developers of the Wayback Machine intended to download all websites in the worldwide web after coming up with a scheme on how to crawl these websites and pages.  Fixes on the discrepancies in the old system were implemented in 2005, when the purpose of the Wayback Machine became more focused.  It became clear that the end goal is to archive and document all accessible websites in the worldwide web.
For 5 years, all data were stored on digital tapes which were available to the public.   In 2011, the storage media became far more sophisticated and the interface for accessing data is far more user-friendly.  The Wayback Machine archive is now considered to be more complete than ever.

Marketing Help from the Wayback Machine
This only means that everyone who wishes to become successful in the worldwide web can rely on the Wayback Machine for stories and tips that have been proven to work for other websites in the past.  All the best and most popular websites through time are within the modern marketer’s reach through the Wayback Machine.  All that the modern marketer has to do is to access the valuable information, analyze them in their own specific circumstances, and apply the lessons in their own online marketing campaigns.

Bounds and Limits of the Wayback Machine
The utility that the Wayback Machine offers has its bounds and limits.  Taking these into consideration, here’s my two cents’ worth: the archiving is more than enough for us, mobile marketing practitioners.  The information available helps us get a clear idea on how to set up our own website with proven success elements.  By looking back at how success was achieved by others in the Wayback Machine, we can find our own strengths.  And, hopefully, we can find our own spot in the vast cyberspace.
