Eight Essential Tools for Online Marketing

Here is a short list of some free online and downloadable tools that you can use to improve your online marketing efforts.

For some of these, you may have to sign up for a free account at the site to avail of the tools.

  1. SEO Toolbar. This Firefox extension allows you to see how your page ranks on the web and what factors go into that ranking, and lets you check out the competition to see what they are doing right or wrong. The information available from the advanced information button includes site and page links, background information, directory listings and traffic estimates as well as information from social media sites. It also gives you links to other research tools such as Alexa.com (traffic ranks) and Compete (consumer digital behavior).
  2. Google Analytics. This online analytical tool allows you to see the way visitors use your site based on which pages they have visited and how long they stayed, as well as letting you measure sales and conversions so you can improve your site’s performance by changing its parameters.
  3. Microsoft Commercial Intention tool. This is a powerful keyword research tool based on results from Yahoo and Bing, which allows you to generate lists of relevant keywords in an Excel interface so that you can use the data for developing strategies to target particular keywords. And you also have access to monthly historical and forecast query data to help you optimize your keyword campaigns based on the search terms people are actually using.
  4. Word Press. If you are interested in creating a blog that is SEO friendly, using Word Press allows you to easily set one up and then increase its functionality by using add-ons.
  5. Twitter. The ubiquitous micro-blogging site allows you to reach your intended audience quickly, as well as capturing new leads. You can use tweets to let followers know about new products and services, company updates as well as any new content that you have posted on your site as well on article directories. You can even use Twitter to build your personal brand as an expert on a particular topic.
  6. Ezine Articles. This is still one of the best sites for article marketing, as it allows you to submit for free. All you have to do is generate unique articles and include a hyperlink back to your site. If enough webmasters like your article, they can even reprint it on their sites, earning your site more backlinks.
  7. YouTube. An increasing number of people spend their time viewing online videos and you can reach them by uploading your videos to the largest video sharing site on the web. Just make sure to include a URL to your site at the end of the video so that people can find your site.
  8. “Add This” Social Bookmark Button. Social networking sites have become essential places for online marketers to build a presence. You can use this tool to get visitors to your site to bookmark your content in social networking sites so that you can get more backlinks and earn higher rankings in search engines.
