  1. Crowdsourcing. This form of collaboration essentially involves asking people on social media sites for help on a particular task, whether it be raising money or doing research. Your business can benefit from crowdsourcing in a number of ways. For example, you can run a contest asking people to come up with the best ideas to promote a new product. Or you can solicit ideas from them on what new features they would like to see on an existing product or service.
  2. Interactive conversations. With the use of Twitter, you can bring groups of people together to have real-time conversations. But these conversations can also take place on Google Hangouts and even on Facebook through Threads. Your company can use these conversations to promote your company’s products and services as well as involving them in product planning. Interactive conversations are also a great way for companies to find out more about what their clients actually want from them.
  3. Community Building. Social media sites effectively bring people together from all over the world that are united by shared interests, in ways that were not possible before. For example, you can have communities of people who are devoted to the music of a particular singer or the works of a certain author. You company can also use social media to build a community around it by creating, for example, a Facebook Fan Page where the company can share information and people can post their comments. Another way of building a community is through a dedicated Twitter feed that lets your company give regular updates on its latest activities.
  4. Networking. This form of collaboration involves bringing people together to form business relationships. For small businesses, online networking is an invaluable way of building contacts that could be monetized later through business opportunities. Networking can also help provide businesses with information that they might otherwise not have access to or would have to spend a lot of money to acquire, such as whether or not it is worth it to open a branch in a particular area.

To further illustrate how online collaboration through social networking can benefit businesses, here is a pair of case studies:

  1. Fallowfields Hotel is a small, specialized hotel located near Abingdon in Oxfordshire in England. When the hotel opened in 1993, it relied on traditional marketing practices. But when the recession hit the hotel in 2008, owner Anthony Lloyd turned to social media to cut costs. Using Twitter, he built its 25,000 followers into a dedicated community who regularly visit the hotel website and help generate new bookings.

Southport Road Dental, run by dentist David Hickey, took advantage of social media to engage existing patients and educate them. Hickey set up accounts on Facebook and Twitter and linked both to the practice’s website, which helped it rank high in local searches for dental services. But its main social media strategy has involved using YouTube videos to let potential new patients see past patients as well as what the practice is like.
