If you’re not aware of what a QR code is, it is a bar code-like square that usually comes with a caption inviting you to scan it with your smart phone. Like bar codes, QR codes contain a lot of information that you can read when you scan it with a code reader. If you don’t have a code reader yet, you can easily download this app from a variety of sources.

The information that can be contained in a QR code is more substantial than what can be found in a bar code and includes alphanumeric text, URLs and coordinates. For example, you can create QR codes that link to videos on You Tube. A typical QR code can contain up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters as well as being able to handle various types of code including binary and symbol. Even better, unlike bar codes, QR codes are self-correcting, meaning that even if the symbol has been reproduced incorrectly, the data it contains can still be transmitted.

For Internet marketers, QR codes are a promotional tool that offers endless possibilities for promoting their businesses, particularly among more affluent Filipinos with smartphones. Here are some ideas for you to consider:

  1. You can give out business cards that have a QR code that links to a promotional video or your website.
  2. If you have a brick-and-mortar store, you can post a large QR code at the front. These codes can be scanned from up to 40 feet away and can be used to direct leads to your website.
  3. If you give out menus for take-out service, you can put a QR code that links to a site where they can order.
  4. You can put QR codes on a variety of promotional products, including T-shirts, mugs, stickers, books and even edibles such as pretzels and cookies.
  5. If you have a Facebook page, you can also place a QR code on your profile. You can even create a QR ‘Like’ Code.
  6. If you are attending a trade fair, you can put QR codes on banners that you can drape over your table. Or you can put QR codes on oversized IDs as an alternative to giving out business cards.
  7. You can put QR codes on receipts that will lead to a capture page where the user can sign up to get e-mail newsletters with discount and freebie coupon codes.

Here are some tips on how you can maximize your use of QR codes for promotional purposes.

  1. Make sure that your website is optimized for mobile phones.
  2. The QR code should be in a place where it can be scanned safely. For example, if you place a QR code on your door, make sure that people are not endangered when they try to scan the QR code from the road.
  3. Place the QR code in a place where there is Wi-Fi access or 3G so that they can access your website.
  4. Indicate on the QR code what types of mobile phones can scan the code.
