The 10 classic SEO Strategies that still works – Updated for 2012

“Findability” is the coined word that refers to the common and sole objective of every search engine optimization task. It is about getting people to find and visit your site. As statistics will bear us out, majority of internet users find the site they want to visit using the various search engines through organic searches.

The results from these organic searches are largely responsible for more than 80% of online purchases with sites appearing in the first few search engine result pages taking the bigger share of the pie all the time. That is why there is always a constant scramble among different competing websites to rank well with the various search engines in their respective categories.

Unfortunately, the ranking algorithm used by the different search engines are and will always be their well-guarded secrets totally unknown to everyone else. As a result, webmasters relied mainly on observed data and best practices that resulted in their pages landing at the top of every SERP.

Based on these observed data, some enterprising webmasters developed methods to make their sites rank well with search engines particularly with Google. The practice was known as Search Engine Optimization or SEO. SEO simply meant making changes to a site to make it search engine friendly. Unfortunately, some went to the extent of gaming Google by using tricks just to rank well prompting Google to alter their algorithm every now and then.

What Google wants is for websites to grow their ranks naturally. There were classic SEO strategies that were developed in the past which have remained to be effective up to today. 10 of these classic SEO strategies are as follows:

1.   Key word research is still a vital SEO strategy. Search engines principally crawl and index content based on Keywords. However, keyword stuffing is passé and generally considered as spam. 2.   Content is still king. As always, search engines simply love new content. You need to update your site with new content at least once a week.

3.   Quality Link Building with related sites. Having quality back links and internal links reflect your importance to other sites and search engines still consider this as a plus point for your site. However, these must be quality links from related refutable sites and not just any site in the internet.

4.   Establish presence in various Social Media Networks. Your presence in various social media networks with links to your site will definitely boost your ranking with search engines.

5.   Your Website Load Speed is still a factor with in Google’s algorithm. If your website is slow loading, your ranking will definitely be affected since a visitor is not likely to click through your site.

  1. H1, H2 and H3 tags for your titles and sub titles are still important to let search engines know what and where the key points of your articles are.

7.   Submit articles to Article Directories. This creates quality backlinks to your site and will give your site much better credibility especially if the site has a high page rank.

8.   Meta Tags or description tags are what appear below the title of your post on search engine result page. Their exact role in SEO is hazy and unclear but a number of SEO professionals still find it important to include Meta tags.

9.   Use Alt Attributes on Images. Search engines can’t see image that is why you need to use alternative text for search engines to know what the image is about. Putting a descriptive alt attribute also give you a chance allows you to add relevant text on the page.

10.                Create a site map for your site. Site maps help search engine bots crawl your site easily. Make sure every page has a link to your main page.
