eYp.ph – Case Review

eYp.ph first launched as the Electronic Yellow Pages in 2001, with a mobile phone version launched the following year.

eYp.ph Frontpage – The portal for SMEs to publish their business information.

The launch highlighted the growing importance of Information Technology to the PLDT, which in 2000 had established ePLDT as a vehicle for its investments in ICT, which included the Internet café chain Netopia, Internet service provider Infocom Technologies and data security services company mySecureSign.

The site uses an advanced search platform allows users to conduct searches that combine specific search terms with location words so that they can find exactly the company they are looking for. But eYp goes beyond being just a digital yellow pages site to provide a variety of services including providing deals from various merchants through the Deal Dozen site, comparing supplier quotes for products and services in the “Canvass” page and even offering a VoIP service. eYp also powers the Juice.ph lifestyle website, which provides event schedules and other information on leisure activities throughout Metro Manila.

By any measure, eYp has successfully dominated its niche of providing complete business contact information to its users, as well as serving as a conduit to link Ready Buyers with the businesses that they are looking for. One testament to its success is that it is one of the most visited sites on the web, with over 350,000 visitors per month availing of their services. And a big reason it remains successful is that eYp has not lost sight of its core business, and when it has expanded, it has been into other areas that complement it, such as e-commerce, rather than venturing into business interests that diverge from it.

It has also leveraged all of the functionality that the Internet has to offer in order to provide its advertisers comprehensive business listings that go beyond the basic contact information offered in the print yellow pages and actively allow businesses to sell their products and services to Ready Buyers. For example, eYp offers a range of advertising packages designed to meet the needs of particular businesses and business sectors, each with its own set of custom features in addition to the standard features that are available with all packages. These include:

Business Showcase dedicated websites that allow businesses to display their company profile, promote their products and directly address any questions their customers might have.

Premium Listings that allow their business listings to appear within the first fifteen search results when a Ready Buyer conducts a search related to them.

Email Blasts that let businesses send updates and news of upcoming promos to eYp’s total user database.

ShopNow@EYP that lets businesses sell their products directly to Ready Buyers through the site’s online marketplace.

For its users, eYp also provides a rewarding online experience that goes beyond just looking for the business that they need. For example, the site has a reward finder page that lets visitors search for rewards from the major credit card providers, including BDO, BPI, HSBC and Citi. And couples who are about to get married can sign up for a free copy of the annual “Your Wedding Guide.”
